DAKAR

The Italian Cultural Institute of Dakar is pleased to present two exclusive screenings under the “Italian Screens” banner, as part of the “Fare Cinema” 2024 series, at Cinema Pathe in Mermoz, Dakar.

The initiative offers Dakar a journey dedicated to Italian female directors, protagonists of an exceptional cinematic season, to provide the local audience with an overview of new female perspectives in “made in Italy” cinema.

On Thursday, July 18, at 8:30 PM, the unmissable event is the film “La Chimera” (2023) by Alice Rohrwacher (Fiesole, 1981), presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where the Italian director previously won the Grand Jury Prize in 2014 for “The Wonders,” and in 2018 the Best Screenplay Award for “Happy as Lazzaro.”

“La Chimera” is a film set in Italy in the 80s, telling the story of a young English archaeologist (Josh O’Connor) involved in the illegal trafficking of Etruscan archaeological artifacts. An adventurous journey where the destinies of various characters intersect, all in search of the Chimera.

Scheduled for Thursday, July 25, at 8:30 PM, is “Gloria!” (2024), the surprising directorial debut of Margherita Vicario (Rome, 1988), a young actress and original singer-songwriter. The film, presented in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, tells the story of a group of orphaned musicians in a religious institution in 1800s Venice, who compose completely new music. “Gloria!” is also, or perhaps above all, as emphasized by the director herself, a tribute to the thousands of women who have made music, composed, and have been sidelined and, often, forgotten over the centuries.
